Eating at Tulum’s famous Charly’s Vegan Tacos
Last weekend I had the opportunity to visit Tulum as a friend of mine (Jay, from “Thriving Plant Based”. Visit his website you’ll thank me later) was staying in this beautiful town. As we were deciding on where to eat we suddenly remembered Charly’s Vegan Tacos. This is a vegan restaurant inside Tulum’s Hotel zone in the Km 4.5 right next to Papaya Playa.
What makes this restaurant stand out is that it’s 100% Vegan, organic, the produce used for the dishes are mostly locally grown and the cousin is 100% Mexican.
My first impression of it was that the place felt spacious but at the same time warm and inviting. I had heard about Charly’s Vegan Tacos from my friends over at the pitted date and also from Youtuber Rawvana so I was more than excited to try it out!
When we got there the waiter was kind enough to offer us their famous Aguas Frescas (Fresh waters), which are typical for accompanying Mexican tacos.
I ordered Hibiscus Water because I just love the taste of it but my other options were Tamarind water, or coconut water. I know tough choice!
The waiter then showed us the specials they had for that day and everything sounded delicious to be honest, but I had already read the menu and was set on trying a bowl of 5 different tacos. I asked for a Taco al Pastor, Mexican Picadillo, Chorizo & Cheese, Pork Cracklings, and Rajas Poblanas.
While we waited for the food to come the lovely waiter showed us around to where the salsas (sauces) were and explained to us what every single one was made of. That was very kind of him as one of those salsas was made out of Habanero and man! Was it spicy! Imagine if he hadn’t told us. I would have probably put it all over my tacos. He also offered to bring some “Guacamango” as an Appetizer and we were more than happy to say yes. Ordering it was a good decision as it was delicious and it distracted us from being too hungry.
I was pretty excited to eat traditional Mexican food that was also vegan, so much so, that I even took a picture of me waiting for my tacos that you can see below.
After what felt like an eternity, which wasn’t more than 15 minutes (I’m exaggerating because I was starving) the tacos had arrived and I didn’t even hesitate to start before everyone else.
Personally, I enjoyed their flavor very much, as they did resemble the flavor of Mexican food, but I felt they resembled Mexican food way too much in the sense that they were a little bit too oily and salty for my liking.
Now! I want to clarify that I never use oil and salt on my food, for the most part, so I obviously have different parameters of how much too much salt or oil something has. That is why I think, even though they were too oily and salty for me, everyone will enjoy the hell out of these tacos.
The Service they gave us was pleasant, welcoming and warm.
Regarding the prices, this is a restaurant that isn’t cheap but isn’t overly expensive either. I’d say a normal person spends from 12 to 14 USD here to eat well.
I’m confident this is a restaurant that both vegans and meat eaters will enjoy as it lives up to its reputation. So next time you are in Tulum’s town make sure to get yourself a Vegan Taco at Charly’s Vegan tacos.
